Understanding implants
Each of your own teeth has roots that extend into the jawbone, giving the crown (the visible portion of the tooth) necessary stability for chewing. A dental implant is a substitution for the root of a missing tooth. In a precise, carefully-planned oral surgery, this small screw-shaped device is implanted into bone. Because the material is biocompatible, bone fuses with the implant, establishing strong support for a restoration.
This technique is commonly used to replace individual missing teeth. After giving the implant several months to integrate with bone, a small incision is made in the gum, and an abutment or post is inserted into the implant. Then, the implant is finished with a cemented or screw-retained crown. This results in an artificial tooth with restored function, that looks natural. In addition, the implant provides vital stimulation that helps to keep facial bone from diminishing.

What is Dental implant?
Dental implants are the gold standard in dentistry today to replace a missing tooth because they have a very high success rate and is relatively a commonly performed procedure.
What is the procedure for placing an implant?
When a patient comes in, they have the tooth removed, and then we graft the site with bone to preserve the bone quality and quantity.
After three months of healing, we insert the implant screw and allow that to heal for a minimum of three months.
After that, we take an impression of the implant and deliver the crown on top of the final implant.
Is the procedure painful?
When patients come in for the placement of the dental implant, we locally numb the side for the implant, and it takes about two hours in the clinic to place the implant.
When they leave, they have the tissue that is sutured on top of the implant and they leave with some medication but overall the procedure is quite comfortable, and the healing time is about two days.
What is the benefit of an implant?
Because it allows the patient and us as dentists to keep a one tooth problem for the patient without touching the adjacent healthy teeth. It is also important to note that when the implant is placed everything is healed and the final crown restoration is placed.
Then you can care for that implant just as you would your natural teeth so there is no additional maintenance or care to keep that implant healthy in your mouth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.
Implants may also be placed to provide stability to a full denture or to anchor a bridge. If you are missing multiple teeth, Dr. Palka Sawhney Sharma will talk with you about these options.
With good oral hygiene, the long-term success rate for dental implants is excellent. If you should ever damage the restoration, it can generally be replaced without disturbing the implant.
