7 Easy Ways You Can Manage Pain and Discomfort While Waiting For An Emergency Root Canal

Emergency Root Canal Treatment in Calgary AB Area

Dental pain can be quite inconsiderate, surfacing at the most unexpected or inconvenient of times. When this pain does surface, and you find yourself seeking relief, or if you know that you need an emergency root canal in the Calgary, Alberta area, you can rest easy knowing that the team at Lake Chaparral Dental Care is just a phone call away. Dr. Palka is dedicated to providing compassionate and patient-centric dental care. If you are dealing with a severe toothache or other sensitivity, seeking professional assistance on time is the most effective strategy. However, while you are waiting for relief, there are some actions you can easily take to ease your dental pain before seeing a dentist.

1. Use a Salt Water Rinse

A warm salt water rinse is a simple yet effective way to reduce inflammation and clean the affected area. Create a solution consisting of warm water with a half teaspoon of salt mixed in, which you will swish around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting out. This natural remedy will assist in soothing irritated tissues, prevent bacterial growth, and may offer temporary relief.

2. Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress helps lessen the pain and minimize swelling if your face is swollen from a toothache. Apply a cloth-wrapped bag of ice or frozen peas to the area of your cheek that hurts. To prevent overexposure to cold, use it every fifteen minutes.

3. Use Store Bought Pain Relievers

Pain relievers you purchase over the counter (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.) are often quite effective at reducing existing pain and inflammation. It is important to follow the dosage instructions carefully and consult your pharmacist or doctor if you’re unsure about taking these medications.

4. Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods

Chewing hard or sticky foods can worsen your pain and potentially cause more damage to the affected tooth. Stick to soft, bland foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or soup, which are easier to eat and less likely to irritate the tooth further.

5. Use Clove Oil

Clove oil is a natural remedy known for its numbing properties. Gently apply a small dab of clove oil using a cotton ball to the painful tooth or gum. This can provide temporary relief while you wait for your emergency root canal treatment in our Calgary office.

6. Keep Your Head Elevated

When lying down, the blood flow to your head can increase, intensifying your toothache. Try sleeping with an extra pillow or sitting upright to help reduce the pressure and alleviate some discomfort.

7. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Hot or cold foods and drinks can exacerbate tooth sensitivity. Stick to lukewarm beverages and avoid overly hot soups or icy drinks until your dentist can address the problem.
