Situations That You May Not Consider Serious But Which May Actually Be A Dental Emergency

For many, a dental emergency is an incredibly stressful situation. This is especially true if the dental emergency involves trauma concerning a broken tooth or blood. However, there is another camp of people who will put off going to the dentist as long as it is humanly possible, even if they find themselves in a dental emergency. If you ignore a dental emergency that may not seem as urgent, such as a toothache, you could be putting your dental health at risk.

Dental Emergencies You Should Not Ignore

If you find yourself in the middle of a dental emergency, you should call your dentist as soon as possible. Here are some specific dental emergencies which you will not want to ignore.

  • Bleeding: While some blood in the mouth may not seem like such a big deal, the reality is that there are a lot of bacteria in the mouth, and you should prevent this from happening. So, if you have bleeding in the mouth, you should consider this a red flag. A minor example is when your gums bleed when you brush or floss. This is a red flag that you are likely experiencing gum disease. If there is blood in your saliva, it could mean something very serious, like advanced gum disease or oral cancer.
  • Bump: A bump in the mouth could be an early indicator of the development of oral cancer. If you find a lump in your mouth, see your dentist immediately.
  • Oral Sores: If you get oral sores that are not going away, it is time to visit your dentist. See your dentist if you have frequently occurring sores or if you are having difficulty swallowing due to the sore.

Dr. Palka Sawhney Sharma graduated with honors from Edmonton’s University of Alberta Neuroscience program. She received dental training at the same university and completed a two-year residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Centre in Philadelphia, PA, where she was chief resident for a year. There, she was also trained in implantology, oral surgery, cosmetic services, and general dentistry. Dr. Palka has applied these skills to help patients in Toronto, Hamilton, and Calgary for over a decade.

Dr. Jay completed her bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences at the University of Toronto and graduated from Griffith University in Gold Coast, Australia, with a Master of Dentistry degree. She got great satisfaction from serving the underprivileged at the Kingaroy Hospital in a rural community in Australia. She is fluent in English and Sinhala.

Both doctors are passionate about ensuring their patients’ dental experiences are as calm and comfortable as possible. They find it extremely rewarding to gain their patients’ trust while providing high-quality dentistry.
