Sports Guards

Calgary, AB athletes can play hard with sports guards

Playing sports helps to keep kids (and adults) active, physically fit, and disciplined. Yet, proper dental protection is a must for ice hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, or any activity that has the potential for impact to the face. Dr. Palka Sawhney Sharma suggests comfortable, custom-fit sports guards to safeguard the smiles of her patients in the Calgary, AB area. In fact, all Lake Chaparral Dental Care patients are encouraged to participate in the ‘Sports Guards for Life’ program whereby new guards are made as they are outgrown – at a fraction of normal cost – for life!

Thermoplastic sports guards

Sports guards are available in a variety of styles (stock, boil-and-bite, custom-fit) and colors. However, the only guard that works is one that gets worn. That is why comfort is so important. A properly-fitted sports guard stays snugly in place, allowing you to breathe naturally, drink water, and speak. It forms a barrier between teeth and external objects such as a puck, elbow, or the gymnasium floor. It is supple enough to lessen trauma to soft tissues, but sufficiently rigid to diminish impact when the mouth snaps shut suddenly. There is also evidence that a mouth guard may reduce the risk of concussion.

Dr. Palka Sawhney Sharma provides thermoplastic sports guards. This material is non-compressible. Instead of force from the point of impact traveling through the guard to teeth, force is distributed across the surface of the device. Perforations create impact-absorbing zones that help to further dissipate force and re-direct it away from teeth.

This type of guard can be worn with orthodontic appliances (braces), and resists bite-through. It is easy to keep clean, too. Just use a soft toothbrush and clear antibacterial hand soap, or soak in denture cleanser.
