Calgary, AB dentist performs wisdom teeth extractions
When Calgary, AB patients may need wisdom teeth extractions
Third molars are large teeth which emerge furthest toward the back of the upper and lower arches. Since they are the last teeth to come in, generally between the ages of 17 and 21, they may crowd existing teeth. The resulting overlaps and twisting are unattractive and make it more difficult to keep teeth clean.
Without enough room in the jaw, third molars may not be able to emerge properly through bone or gum tissue. Impaction can contribute to:
- Headaches
- Mouth pain
- Food traps
- Periodontal disease
- Tooth decay
- Damage to bone or adjacent teeth
- Development of oral cysts
You may also consider wisdom teeth extractions in preparation for orthodontic treatment or dentures.
About the procedure
Dr. Palka Sawhney Sharma begins with a comprehensive examination of your mouth, and questions about your symptoms. X-rays provide a better perspective on the size and position of wisdom teeth, as well as soft and hard tissues in the root area. If the case is complex with increased risk of complications, you are referred to an oral surgeon. Otherwise, treatment with Dr. Palka Sawhney Sharma is scheduled.
On the day of your procedure, your mouth is thoroughly numbed. If necessary, the doctor makes an incision in gum tissue so the tooth may be exposed. Large wisdom teeth are cut into sections for easier removal. The site is then cleaned, and a few stitches may be placed to promote healing. A pad of sterile gauze helps to control bleeding and aids in clotting. You receive post-procedure instructions to follow at home. Please plan to take it easy the rest of the day. Then you may gradually progress from a soft diet back to normal eating, as the mouth heals.
If you have concerns after your extractions, guidance is just a phone call away at Lake Chaparral Dental Care – (403) 768-2271.
